Definitely a must visit. It’s all that’s left of the old castle and dates back to the 1200s. The Round Table on the wall might not be from King Arthur’s time but it’s still really cool to see. Loved the stained glass windows showing all the kings and key figures, and the Norman medieval architecture is just stunning. It’s full of history and the whole place just feels majestic. That's fine, but don't skip the rest.
The staff are very helpful and friendly, and quite willing to spend the extra time explaining the various tickets, what is where, and what the photography rules are etc.
Do take a look at the garden, the giant family tree at the other end of the hall from the table, and the long gallery.
The cafe is good for a quick drink and snack, but if you're planning on a meal, plan on a restaurant.

The Great Hall in Winchester absolutely blew me away. It’s one of the best-preserved medieval halls in England, dating back to the early 1200s. The architecture is stunning – huge Gothic windows, soaring stone columns, and a real sense of grandeur. The highlight has to be the legendary Round Table hanging on the wall, believed to have been built in the 13th century and painted during Henry VIII’s reign. You can really feel the weight of history here – once part of Winchester Castle and a key seat of royal power. Super informative displays, friendly staff, and a beautiful garden outside. Excellent pocket sized museum tucked away at the back of the High Street. Charming, friendly staff to point you in the right direction plus a wealth of historical local artifacts covering 2,000 years. I'm not a fan of models but there is a beautiful detailed model of Winchester on the ground floor. I am a big fan of mosaics and there is a beautiful Roman one displayed on the first floor. All the floors are packed with amazing finds, including a skeleton. Loads of dressing up for the kids and give some time to listen to a superb chat about Victorian picnics. We visited here as part of a group ticket with the Westgate Museum and Great Hall. The Museum has 3 floors, each covering a different time period - roughly the Iron Age/Roman city, the anglo Saxon and Medieval city and finally the Industrial Revolution city.

I used to live fairly close to Winchester when I was much younger. But I could not understand why it was so very important. Centuries ago it was one of the hearts of medieval England. But now it is a mere shadow of its former self.
I decided to spend some time in the Winchester City Museum to see if I could discover some of the secrets of the once great City. It was perhaps the beginning of a long trail of discovery. Of which the antiquated fragments seemed to merge together. Like a great wooden jigsaw puzzle. With corners and edges aligning to a mystic symmetry not previously guessed or imagined. At least not perceived by my feeble young intelligence I was very impressed with the news that the Winchester City Museum were connected to some important archeological digs. I would've very much liked to have been considered for one of the local excavations. And downstairs in the museums basement one of the staff proudly showed me what looked like a small lump of mud. Apparently the lump of mud had been discovered during a 'dig'.
I hope that I didn't appear to be too ignorant to participate in contemplating the origins of this mysterious little lump.
I almost had another unfortunate mishap were I couldn't see the price tags on the postcards. So I wrongly assumed that they were all free. Luckily the staff explained my error and I paid for the postcards before leaving the museum.

Sadly as with time, parts of the site has now been secured off due to natural deterioration. Well worth a visit to all the professionally laid out museums, each one being unique in their own way. All staff were so friendly , helpful and knowledgeable a big thank you to all of them. A wonderful treasure trove of antiquated collectibles. Each and every item in this small single room museum has a fascinating story to tell. It is a short but steep climb up a flight of stairs. From the street pavement into the compact museum. And then another short steep climb up to the roof of the Westgate. Chester Zoo is definitely very good for the preservation of a number of endangered species and as such deserves a lot of support. The enclosures for the animals are large however the knock on effect is that it can be difficult to see some of the animals. The boat trip was really good. Nice and tranquil way to see some of the enclosures from different angles. The food offerings on site were varied and reasonably priced. All in all a good day out for young and old alike. We hosted our wedding reception there 16th August 2025. We used the Wintonian Bar for the fizz reception, and for the main bar area, and then the King Charles Hall for the wedding breakfast.
The Wintonian Bar was fit for purpose, it was a little warm in there, but they have massive windows that should be opened which does rapidly cool the room. The King Charles Hall is a lovely room for a meal. The paintings and chandeliers self-decorate the room.

When you first visit Winchester you can’t help but notice this amazing building that stands out next to the King Alfred Statue. Imposing Victorian building of the Guildhall of Winchester serves different purposes these days. Very friendly Tourist Office is right there with some pretty interesting displays about the history of old Winchester. It is also used as a venue for weddings, public events, conferences, etc.
You can go to a nice coffee inside and take a break from sightseeing. Gained access as part of the Jane Austen 250 years celebration. This is an outstanding gem of a place I never knew existed. Incredible artifacts beautifully presented. I believe the Treasury is open to the public daily 1400 to 1600 but while the Jane Austen exhibition is on it is open all day. Please go you will not be disappointed. The Riflemans Museum, located in the Peninsula Barracks in Winchester, is a fantastic little museum spread across two floors, complete with a stair lift for accessibility. We were amazed by the vast number of exhibits on display. The staff were very welcoming and informative, enhancing our experience. A standout feature is the extensive display dedicated to the Battle of Waterloo. This enormous display case, which is truly astonishing in scale, features approximately 20,000 soldiers and 9,000 horses. While the overall presentation is impressive, a closer look reveals countless intricate details and smaller scenes within the larger tableau. Additionally, a narrated light show occurs every 10 minutes, providing valuable insights into the diorama and the battle it represents. If you're a fan of the Sharpe novels, this museum is a must-visit. There is also a stunning collection of medals, which serve as a remarkable testament to military history. As someone joked, “blokes don’t do bling.” Overall, the museum is fascinating and set in a beautiful area. We drove down to visit today, I love a regimental museum and this one was great. It's interesting to see the history and glory of it all. So many conflicts fought, so many deaths, so many medals issued; 59 Victoria Crosses here amongst the many others. This is well worth your time, just watching the battle of Waterloo diarama explain the battle was outstanding. I recommend attending and supporting all this history. The staff were very friendly and there is a lot of information spread across two floors. We visited this museum on Saturday afternoon, expecting to go on to the Gurkha museum and others in the complex. We actually spent 3 hours in the RGJ Museum and that was with skimming over the post WW1 sections.
What an amazing museum, so well done and so much to see and read. The dioramas were excellent, particularly the Waterloo one which was huge and gave a real scale of the conflict as well as some lovely personal details.
For me the most interesting section was the Victorian era colonial wars with minor conflicts seemingly all over the globe, one after the other. What a lovely place. Not recommended for elderly, pregnant, less-abled though. The walk up does have some steps, but there's a lot of slippery chalk to contend with going up or down the hill. Only been once so maybe there's others ways/paths but we went up 1 way and down another and both slippery in Autumn. Great views at the top. Nice little woods for kids to play hide and seek in. There is a labyrinth on the NE side (about 60 degrees NE) side of The Clump. The starting point is very close to the clump (see photo).
This is the largest labyrinth I have come across in the U.K. Even bigger than the one in Glastonbury (and has less crazy people).
It’s is such a pleasant surprise to discover a labyrinth here.
Walking a labyrinth is believed to have a meditative effect. A labyrinth is different from a maze in that there is only one way in, and once you reach the centre point of the labyrinth, you turn around and walk back on the same path.
Because your brain is not trying to solve problems when you’re walking a labyrinth, and it’s not in a fight or flight mode (not trying to get out of the maze), you can relax, and pay attention to how you feel and how your foot steps land on the ground.

Winnall Moors Nature Reserve is off the beaten track around 10/15 minutes from the City Centre. You will enter a peaceful area with scattered places to sit while traversing the region. The pond area in particular is secluded and gives you a chance to admire the ducks and have sight of the overgrown marsh. There are many secluded spots and areas to locate. It is a reserve that requires frequent visits to explore and you will unlikely see it all on one visit. Once we found this wonderful oasis of calm, we have been back multiple times.
As a mobility restricted person, I have to use my mobility scooter. So it was fabulous to find the car park right next to the entrance so I didn't have to cross the busy Rd. This site is completely accessible with gates instead of kissing gates and flat pathways and boardwalks both wide enough for my scooter with room to spare for others to pass round me. I love that dogs and bicycles are not allowed, this saves me the torture of trying to get dog poo off of my wheels before I put my scooter back in the car.

A lovely free place to visit (if you can find it) just a 10 minute walk along the river behind City Mill. For some reason it doesn't seem to be sign posted and I couldn't find the Water Vole Trail supposedly way marked from the Abbey gardens.
So, if you'd like to go there walk down Water Lane (to the right of City Mill) and you'll see a riverside path on the left. Follow it to the end then cross the road and you'll find the entrance on the left - check out the photos so you'll know what you're looking for.
It gets quieter and more interesting as you get further from the city and you can't get lost, it's an easy circular route.

We were not exactly expecting much from a nature reserve in the middle of Winchester.. and the only reason we decided to check it out, was because I spotted it on a map, when we planned to visit the London Canera Exchange a few months back, which we never did... Sadly a part of it was closed off due to grazing animals, but we eventually came across the pond, in the centre of the Reed Beds and it turned out to be an amazing day... the highlights were the Reed Warblers and Reed Buntings... Highly recommended to anyone interested in photography.. oh and one thing, if you own a dog, you cannot take it into the reserve, which for me personally, was a bonus as dogs and water are like magnets and while I love dogs, there are certain places where they simply shouldn't be allowed.

My great grandad was in the Royal Hampshire regiment so I thought I’d give this a visit. A small, quaint and unassuming museum but packed full of history. From musket balls to machine guns to medals and much more, the museum tells the tale of the regiment and their extensive history especially over the two world wars. Visited here recently. Free entry, which is great but of course leaving a donation is an option. I have no connections with Hampshire but I still found the items fascinating, especially the World War Two stuff and the Palestine artefacts. As a friend of Bill I had a special interest in going there, just have a word with the staff if that is your reason for visiting. Like other places in Winchester, the staff here were very hospitable and knowledgeable, making the visit a memorable one. A fantastic museum covering the history of the Royal Hampshire Regiment from The Battle of Minden through to amalgamation in 1992. The exhibits on display are fascinating with good interpretation to help the visitor understand the relevance of the object. There are several extremely life-like figures of Hampshire soldiers through the ages.
There is so much to see here that each time I return I spot something new.
The staff are very welcoming and happy to answer any questions.

Today was perfect for a walk along the river and enjoy a coffee on our way to the castle.
The river was in full flow and crystal clear.

A magical place in the heart of Winchester. A beautiful, peaceful riverside walk just minutes from the high street linking the City Mill (free entry, NT, cafe, lovely garden area, otters) to Winchester college.
From there it's a short stroll through the Water Meadows alongside the crystal clear chalk streams of the Itchen to the Hospital of St Cross (free entry to cafe). The two sections combined make up the Keats Walk and can be extended to include St Catherine's Hill, all together a 4 mile circular route completely off road except for a couple of quiet roads around the college linking The Weirs and The Meadows.
